Follow these simple steps to obtain your New York State Security Guard License:
Step 1: Complete the 8-Hour Pre-Assignment Training Course
Begin by enrolling in and successfully completing the required 8-Hour Pre-Assignment Training Course. This course provides the basic knowledge and skills needed to work as a security guard in New York State.
Step 2: Complete the 16-Hour On-the-Job Training Course
After finishing the Pre-Assignment Course, complete the 16-Hour On-the-Job Training Course. This training is typically completed over the next two days and covers the duties, responsibilities, and practical skills needed in the security field.
Step 3: Get Fingerprinted
Once your training is complete, your security training school will help you schedule a fingerprinting appointment. The fingerprinting fee is $104.50.
After your fingerprints are taken, you will receive two receipts:
- One receipt for your personal records.
- One receipt to include with your security guard license application.
Step 4: Submit Your Application
Complete your New York State Security Guard License application and submit it along with:
- Your training certificates
- The fingerprint receipt
- Any other required documentation
All materials must be sent to the New York State Division of Licensing Services for review.
Step 5: Wait for Approval
After your application has been submitted, the New York State Division of Licensing Services will process your paperwork. The average approval time is approximately three weeks.
Step 6: Receive Your Security Guard License
Once your application is approved, you will receive your New York State Security Guard License and can begin working as a licensed security guard.
